KickRaTT Banner
KickRaTT is a name that I gave to my music equipment & synthesizer rig and a name that I have performed & released music under since 1989. From 1999 to 2002, I also used the name for a mobile digital recording service for DJs, House Partys & Clubs, this service also went under the title of DATMAN. Mike Kelley is a progressive jazz & rock composer. A guitarist who grew up in a house of classical piano players. A musician very well versed on both the guitar & keyboard. Influenced by all styles of music. From garage bands to mainstream acts, symphonic orchestras to computer compositions. I am always listening to a new rhythm, a new chord, a new hook to write material that has it's own approach. I have worked and played on both the East & West coast, as a solo act musician, band member and worked  briefly as a sound designer. Miami, Tampa, Orlando, San Francisco, Seattle, Gainsville, Jacksonville & St.Augustine, have all been very supportive of my work. Music is the best! & has always been a creative pursuit in my life.

"When creativity comes at you, you usually don't see it coming and all of a sudden you are totally into something. Reaching for something new, a new sound for a new song. I like to tear everything down and look at the pieces scattered about & it is usually in this mess that I find what I have been looking for."

I am always redefining my studio. Stocking it with drum machines, synthesizers both new & old, guitar equipment, pre-amps and effects, making small investments in my own creative future. To enjoy the music's presentation on the Internet and the comments from you, the listener.

On this page you will find links into views of my home studio as well as links to my other music project synthIT. The soundclick player contains a number of original recordings that I have done over the years. Most of this page will give you a brief description of each of the songs played here on the soundclick player. Sort of a compositional timeline of solo and project recordings that I have made with my studio at various stages and levels. You can also find at the top of each page links to the KickRaTT & synthIT myspace music pages. Connect as a friend and comment, I like to share ideas.

          sounclick player tracks

I am currently going through a remastering process of this matterial. The remastered tracks are also available if you wish to purchase at .99 cents each, through the soundclick store using a paypal  account. You will find the store button at the top of the soundclick player. Your support is appreciated.

Dust - which for the longest time was titled Forever Falling is a Composition for Guitar Improv that I wrote & recorded back in 1991. I also use on the recording the eMu proteus drum module & a Roland 1080 bass Guitar sound. For the longest time I have been wanting to remaster this piece. This is the first track of my music that I will remaster and is available for purchase.

This set of tracks represent a direct approach to electronic composition, the XL7 drum machine controls the synth gear. An excellent form of tempo electronica. The emu XL7 is a great compositional tool & a lot of fun to work with. Of these tracks; Contact is a very large wavestation performance. Moods has me playing a Fender Bass.

Traveller - XL7, WladorfQ & Novation SuperNova

Nda Wink of an I - XL7, Novation SuperNova

Contact - XL7, Korg Wavestation, WaldorfQ, Novation SuperNova

Victoria - XL7, WaldorfQ

Sand Drawing - XL7 & Korg Wavestation

moods - XL7, Fender Bass guitar, WaldorfQ

Bug Spray - XL7, & WaldorfQ

This next track is the first recording using the XL7

rats - XL7 & Novation SuperNova

This next group of songs on the soundclick player are from the larger set of recordings that I made with a friend of mine, Chance, 1991. Samples of various vintage synths and other sound sources were collected and modified using an Akai sampler, and then put together into larger soundscapes on Reel-Reel & cassette tape recorders. I hope you enjoy these rather unique recordings of sonic textures from my music's past.

"...a memory from Gainesville"

The Setting Sun - A Wavestation Performance

During the 90's I lived in Seattle. I was in an electronic act called PinGoN. The band was made up of three members. A keyboardist, a singer and myself. The next two songs on the player are two recordings by this act.

Red Water - Master Trax sequencing
Davi's Dream - w/ live vocals and playing

KickRaTT "Live in Seattle" 1997 - This was my first real attempt at a solo performance. This is almost 10 minutes from a 45 minute recording of me running my music rig Live at the Seattle Space Needle New Year's Eve 1997. This also marks my first live performance under the name KickRaTT. This recording is of a huge sequence with me triggering samplers and playing both keyboard and guitar live.

This rest of the recordings on the soundclick player are various recordings from my past. Most were recorded using 4track casette recorders or 8 track reel to reel.

These Digital Kidz -Guitar Synth triggerng a Wavestation & UltraProteus.Hexaphonic

Shore Sounds Strange – I used an 8 track reel to reel to compose. Actual real nature samples were strung and editted together. This one is dedicated to the work of Louis & BeBe Barron. All tape no chips!

Numerology & Randomosity Compositions

Swamp Gas - computer generated composition in BASIC.
Duck's Pond - computer generated composition in BASIC.
The Elephant's Back - computer generated composition in BASIC.

Swamp Gas, Duck's Pond, Elephants Back are tunes that were written allowing a computer to generate the score. All of the notes, chords and rhythms were chosen by a program I wrote in BASIC using an old Apple IIe. An Apple IIe with 8K of RAM and a printer which plotted out the score. The versions that are available on the soundclick browser are two times longer than the original. The first half score took the old Apple IIe two days to print. The second half of the score was a cut and paste job by me using at the time, Master Trax on a Macintosh SE30. The midi output directed a Roland Sound Canvas, e-Mu Proteus Procussion Module & an old Yamaha Dx7. The original compositions were printed and plotted into Master Trax in 1994 and weren't recorded until 1999. These are the recordings I made of the computer generated scores.

Riverside Room - A Composition for Guitar Improv, Roland & eMu Drum kits, Korg Roland & eMu synth modules.

Changing Channels is a tape loop composition, primarily using a single TASCAM 8trk Reel to Reel, with recordings of a Roland TR-707 drum machine, a clean rythm guitar and a distorted guitar. Some of the tracks were so reversed and recorded down to alternative mixer channels that the original is long lost. I have a take of this recording with some spoken word poetry by a friend of mine that is very interesting.

Western AM Radio is one of the first multi-track recordings I ever made. At the time I used an old CASIO keyboard, a KORG POLY 61, a BOSS guitar delay pedal and a Roland drum machine. Fostex 4 trk cassette recorder.

Crazy Screaming - Old mixtape guitar improv WAH WAH recording w/ Roland drum machine.
